Introduction to Silk Painting: Create Your Own Scarf with Artist Sevil Acar

Join us to learn the basics of hand painting on silk at Production Mode!

Artist Sevil Acar will lead a small group (6 ppl max) through the basics of painting on silk.

Sevil will provide all the necessary materials for you to hand paint 22”X 22” silk habotai scarf including:

-silk stretcher frame, silk hoop, gutta applicator bottle & tip, gutta, silk dyes, brush, a blank silk habotai scarf, textile pen, pushpins and a mask- all of which you will be able to keep to continue your practice after the workshop (a value of over $60/person).

Over the course of the day, Sevil will guide you through the process of hand painting a scarf, including how to:

  • stretch silk onto a frame

  • create a design using templates (which Sevil will provide)

  • transfer a design to silk using gutta to outline your design

  • apply silk dye with brush

  • fix dyes to silk using steam

Plus, there will be the opportunity for guidance on more advanced techniques for more experienced artists.

Sevil will provide demos, physical examples and an instruction sheet to follow along, as well as guidance while you create your scarf.

This workshop is intended to be fun and relaxing, for absolute beginners and experienced artists alike. Come out for an enjoyable learning a new skill, and to create a scarf to wear or gift*! 

Light refreshments will be provided to enjoy while you create.

*Note- Silk paints take 3-4 days to set and require steam fixing to do so. Sevil will set your scarf for you after the workshop and you will be able to pick it up at Production Mode the following week (or we can mail them to you). Instructions on how to set silk paints will be included as part of the workshop.

Sevil Acar is an Istanbul-born and raised, Chicago-based artist currently practicing jewelry making and silk painting. Sevil began her career as a designer, after graduating from Istanbul Technical University, Department of Industrial Product Design. She worked on various product design projects including furniture, tableware, carpet, and rugs before moving to Chicago. Currently at her Lillstreet Art Center studio, she is creating with the aim of synthesizing her product design background and traditional crafting skills to design and fabricate handcrafted, story telling jewelry and silk painting pieces rooted from the east side of the world.
